So Cal Reads Book Club – Yellow Wife: A Novel

About the book:
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world.

She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre, a jail in Richmond, Virginia, where the enslaved are broken, tortured, and sold every day. There, Pheby is exposed not just to her Jailer’s cruelty but also to his contradictions. To survive, Pheby will have to outwit him, and she soon faces the ultimate sacrifice.

Bel Canto Books: Indie Bookstore of the Month

Each month, So Cal Readers (WNBA-LA’s reading group) will be exploring a book written by a local author, who will in turn share with us their favorite independent bookstore.  Our September Book is The Woman in Red” by Diana Giovinazzo.  Be sure to join WNBA-LA so you don’t miss out on the So Cal Readers monthly reading group (2nd Tuesday of the month).

Diana nominated Bel Canto Books as one of her favorite indie bookstores.  When asked why she loves Bel Canto Books, she said,

“What I love about Bel Canto is that Jhoanna always has a smile on her face and new books to discover. Likewise, if there is a book that she doesn’t have she’s willing to get it for me. I certainly can’t help but swing by for a new book and a plant.”

Stop by Bel Canto Books and see Jhoanna’s smiling face for yourself!
